Shingles Vaccine FAQs

Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster, is a viral disease caused by a reactivation of the same virus that causes chickenpox. Most people have chickenpox during childhood, but after the illness is gone, the virus remains dormant in the nervous system. Your immune system usually keeps the virus under control, but later in life, in some cases, it can become active again and cause shingles. So, if you have ever had chickenpox, you may potentially be at risk of developing shingles.

Shingles usually affects a specific area on either side of the body, and starts with some initial pain and tingling. This normally progresses to a painful rash which develops into itchy blisters and then scabs over. In the majority of cases, the pain and rash lasts from 7 to 10 days and can take from 2 to 4 weeks to fully heal.

The rash usually only affects the upper body on one side, but can also develop on the head, neck and around the eyes.

In some cases, complications may occur after you have had shingles, leaving some people with long-term nerve pain that can continue for months after the blisters and rash have healed – this is called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). The older you are, the higher the chance of developing PHN as a result of shingles.

  • Anyone who has had chickenpox.
  • People over the age of 50.
  • People with a weakened immune system.
  • People who are under significant stress.
  • People who may have certain illnesses and/or are undergoing certain treatments. (eg. Cancer, HIV, etc.)

The vaccine not only helps reduce your risk of developing shingles, but can lessen the severity and duration of any symptoms if you do. The vaccine also reduces your risk of developing PHN.

The shingles vaccine is available all year round to anyone aged 50 or over. If you have had shingles before, you can still have the vaccination provided it’s been over 1 year since you have had shingles.

It’s not recommended for those with a weakened immune system, pregnant women or anyone who’s had a previous shingles vaccination.

If you’re in any doubt, speak with your pharmacist, who can give you more information about the vaccination and advise whether it’s suitable for you.

The charge for the shingle vaccination service is €199.00
